Colliery Headgear Bolts

Post by analoguesat »

With loads of collieries now on the TUK site I have to ask where on the headgear were the bolts fitted?

BTW Bilston Glen (16420) should be destroyed - the headgear was flattened a while back.

Lady Victoria Colliery (16441) is the Scottish Mining Museum. The headgear still stands although the chances of anyone getting to have a look are virtually zero if its any distance above ground.

It's a good question. AFAIK no headgear bolts have been found in situ. My guess would be no fixed choice for location, just wherever seemed convenient as long as it was high up.

Presumably the bolt would have been on one of the horizontal girders, although the idea of surveying whilst hanging onto a colliery headgear with the wheel whirring round a few feet away would give modern day 'elf n safety gurus a fit!
