Noticed yesterday whilst passing by train that the expansion of the Thorpe Park Estate,
on the east side of Leeds, is underway with the construction of a new link road.
Some details at: http://www.thorpepark-parklife.co.uk/th ... nt-update/
The Brown Moor trig pillar, http://trigpointing.uk/trig/1708 lies on the eastern boundary
of the site and as far as I can tell, should be missed by the development. But one to watch.
Regards
Ted
Brown Moor (Leeds)
Re: Brown Moor (Leeds)
The pillar looks pretty safe for the time being as all the projected developments are on the northern side of the Thorpe Park development. Most of the land to the east of the current park is what I'd call waste scrub land. The OS map doesn't show the current site as well as it could really, it shows the pillar as being on open land north east of Thorpe Park when in actuality the trig sits inside the perimeter of a fenced (and cropped) field with some new-ish woodland to the west of this fence. A footpath runs along the side of the fence heading north to reach the railway line. Indeed one to watch, but not in imminent threat me-thinks!
Re: Brown Moor (Leeds)
Current update following a field visit today reveals things not quite as simple as in the planning application as linked by ted. Just about the whole of the area, not just the northern end, is currently a building site. On the attached picture the enclosed Red area depicts the area currently under development. The enclosed Green area roughly represents the 'Green Space' as proposed by the developers. The Blue line represents the revised RoW towards Manston Lane as a result of the current developments as access to all other RoW's is unavailable
The following webpage gives a more visual idea of what is projected http://www.thorpe-park-consultation.co.uk/. The trigpoint sits on the eastern end that is denoted as 'Green Space' a tad under the W of 'Brown Moor'.
The pillar is 50 metres from the furthest eastern end of the (fenced off) development (where it 'dog-legs'). The small wooded area to the west of it still exists. One presumes (hopes) that whilst the area looks like a building site at the moment the 'Green Space' is going to be landscaped and the area around the trig left alone.
Contrary to my last entry the pillar doesn't actually sit in the adjacent field. The pillar sits between the fenced field and a row of hawthorn bushes (it will be difficult to see the pillar in the summer foliage) on the Thorpe Park side of the fence, however, the revised RoW on the 'Green Space' section passes adjacent the pillar and may be it's savior in the immediate future.

Re: Brown Moor (Leeds)
Logged Brown Moor today. The footpath has indeed been diverted along the hedge line. So the pillar looks safe to me. The area will look very different when the development is completed.
Re: Brown Moor (Leeds)
Despite recent logs, http://trigpointing.uk/trig/1708 the Brown Moor trig still exists!
Looks to be safe for the time being; at least until someone decides that shopping park expansions
are more important than trees
