Bricksbury Hill – dilapidated

Post by sphinx2 »

My TP colleague and I are firmly convinced that this is the correct location. Whereas others have tended toward Caesar’s Camp due to the adjacent lettering, Bricksbury Hill on the 25,000 map (stripytigger 31 May 2020), peregrinus is content (25 May 2020). However, the lettering Bricksbury Hill fills the whole area on the 50,000 Landranger map, and old maps are similarly less biassed to the Camp. The other reason for our confidence is that the small increase in height (188) compared with the spot height 182 near the Camp, means that this TP has line of sight to TPs to the south. It can sight due north and south to give good triangulation coverage. This opinion is helped by the use of the OS maps in my iPad where I can link locations on the map to give an elevation profile, showing just enough clearance due south. As to the fate of the TP one thought is that it suffered frost damage under construction and it stayed intact for the few days of surveys and thus had an FB number. It may well have started to disintegrate and the OS removed the fittings. This may explain its awful condition and why it did not get into any maps. Its short useful life is further suggested by the fact that it is not shown in the One-Inch Seventh Series sheet 169, Fully Revised 1956. A visit to Kew may confirm! For the photograph, note the roof of a van on the A287 in the background.
