TP0199 - Charnwood - OS plate

Post by martinhinrich »

Popped in to here today and there's an OS plate on the side that reads as follows;

"Ordnance Survey

This monument forms part of the Ordnance Survey National GPS Network.

It is an offence to damage it.

If found damaged please ring our helpline on 08456050505

Thank you.

July 1999"

Does anyone know if this is special or normal? Are OS still maintaining some pillars?

I thought they'd abandoned them all...

Some of the remaining trig pillars were converted to passive stations by the OS in ~1999, including Charnwood (http://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/gps/leg ... n/C1SK5014).

A little bit more information is available on the wiki (http://trigpointing.uk/wiki/Trigpoints# ... _era_-_GPS), but basically, some fairly accessible pillars were accurately surveyed by the OS using GPS and were used as reference points. A full list of passive stations is available on here (http://trigpointing.uk/trigs/view-trigs.php?q=1879740).
