Newbie possibly undiscovered.

Post by Mcheshire »

Hi I had never even heard of trig pointing until today after stumbling across a strange object in the woods. How do I find out if this is a previously discovered Trigpoint ? It is located close to quite a well known landmark with its own trig point at the location. (Ivinghoe beacon)

If this is an Ordnance Survey trig pillar, there will be a brass plate near the bottom on one side. This will contain the letters OSBM and a number. The numbers are unique. If you tell us that number, we can identify the trig. To the best of my knowledge all live OS pillars have now been found. There is a sliver of a chance you may have stumbled upon a relocated pillar deemed 'lost or destroyed' to date.

The number will have either four or five digits.

Take a picture and upload it. Even if it's not a trig someone might be able to tell you what it is.

Clipper Down trig point is situated in the south West corner of the rectangular woodland, less than 2km south of Ivinghoe beacon. Possibly this one.
