My house has this mark on it. Can anybody tell me if it is, or ever has been, of any significance.
The file information of the picture gives its location as Lat. 53.25.33.95 Long. 2.10.16.72
Unidentified mark

Re: Unidentified mark
That's an Ordnance Survey benchmark. I'm struggling to decode the given coords though; could you tell me a bit more about the location i.e. address or town at least?
Re: Unidentified mark
Pasting N 53 25 33.95 W 2 10 16.72 into Google Maps indicates Stockport, near theLat. 53.25.33.95 Long. 2.10.16.72
junction of Manchester Road (A626) and Halesden Road. Is that correct?
https://www.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/gps/transformation/ can be used to
convert this to an OS grid reference 388713.73 392156.881
and then http://www.bench-marks.org.uk/ can be used to search for benchmarks
in the vicinity of SJ 88713 92156
But it reports the nearest to be nearly 300 metres away
Not sure if the database doesn't include all OS marks, or if this particular mark is non-OS.
Or maybe my sums are wrong
Regards
Ted

Re: Unidentified mark
The BM database definitely doesn't contain all Ordnance Survey benchmarks, but as a general rule those missing are older marks. This one looks like a NBM judging by the brickwork. I tried that SJ8892 and one other SJ square from another translation, but nothing obviously close there either.

Re: Unidentified mark
We're talking about the right place.
Apparently when some civil works were going on nearby 5 or 6 years ago, a chap in a hi-viz top and a safety helmet carrying a theodolite asked my wife if he could look at the mark. Before that we had no knowledge of it being there, seemingly this chap did, so I guess it must be on record somewhere?

Wahey Thank you. It's probably staring me in the face on the link you posted but is there any way of establishing when the mark was made?

It's not on that page, but on the OS source page, enter SJ8892 in the search box: 1959
