Campbelton Hill Trig??

Post by dingodoo »

I am looking for any information relating to a Trigonometrical Station on Campbelton Hill (Postcode: KA23 9QG) in Ayrshire Scotland.
After looking at archive OS name books this hill is listed as having a trig point.
https://scotlandsplaces.gov.uk/digital- ... lume-63/39

This hill unlike neighbouring Goldenberry Hill does not seem to have a trig point so am asking what kind of Trig was on this hill, when was it placed there and when was it removed?, what design was it?, height, width etc...

The triangulation station is marked on the 1857 Series 1 OS 6" Ayrshire, Sheet VI, as you'll hopefully see on the attachment. Unfortunately, physical evidence of the Principal Triangulation is almost non-existent. What's certain is that it would have looked nothing like the commonly recognised Hotine pillar that was used for some 30% of stations during the Retriangulation from 1936 onwards. It was most likely a large flattish stone with a carved arrow mark, possibly buried.
